Academics

Scholarship is of highest priority at Pi Beta Phi.

Study Table

Within our house we encourage people to study in groups so that study habits and knowledge can be passed between our members and pledges.

As far as individual study there is a study table program. All new members start off with 8 hours to complete each week. All study table hours are based on GPA, the higher the GPA the less number of study table hours. Anybody member with a 3.30 GPA or above is not required to participate in study table, although they are encouraged to help others. There is monitored study sessions available throughout the week so everybody on study table is able to complete their study hours whenever it fits into their schedule. Study table hours for all members and pledges are re-evaluated at midterms and semester. Hours cannot be increased, but decreased if the person has a higher GPA than what they are currently doing study table for.

Incentives

We offer many incentives to people for studying. For the members who achieve a GPA of a 4.0 at semester they are given ‘smarty pants,’ which are sweat pants that have embroidery of ‘smarty pants’ on them. We also have a no skip box that members and new members put their name in if they do not skip class for a whole week. Names are drawn weekly and prizes are given out to those people whose names are drawn. We also have a ‘study buddy’ blanket that is passed on each week to the person who has been studying the most or helping others out. The person who receives the blanket gets to sign it and keep it for the week.

Study Room

In order to encourage people study our house has a study room which is 24 hour quiet. It is equipped with Ikea personal computer desks for anybody who chooses to keep their computers in that room. There are multiple Ethernet plug-ins for everybody to use. We also have Ikea project desks in the room for people to complete projects on. In the study room there are professor files, test files, and old text books. The professor files are cards which tell us about a professors teaching style, how they grade, if we liked them, etc. to help us choose which professor to register for when picking our classes. The test files are all of the old tests that we have taken. There are hundreds of tests that we have compiled for people to study from when they have upcoming tests in the same class that somebody else has already taken. The old text books are generally not used in classes anymore but work great for clarification if the current textbook a student is using is not clear.

Scholarships

Pi Beta Phi offers the Margaret Kinyon Scholarship once a year. This award is for $1600 which is split among three members in the house. The award is based on the person from each pledge class with the highest cumulative GPA.

There are also an assortment of various scholarships through Pi Beta Phi nationally.

All other scholarships that come up within the university are posted in the house and members are encouraged to apply for them throughout the year.
